Mosman Oval was renamed Allan Border Oval during Mosman’s centenary in 1993 as a tribute to the former Mosman resident and Captain of the Australian Cricket Team – Allan Border – who grew up in The Crescent, Mosman.
Mosman Park, bounded by Gouldsbury Street, Myahgah Road and The Crescent, includes Allan Border Oval. The park was opened on 26 September 1900 and the oval was laid out by volunteer labour. A small pavilion was built in 1904, replaced by a larger one in 1912. The current brick pavilion was opened on 14 October 1939 by the Mayor Alderman Frank G. Purcell and later named the K.O.E. Johnson Pavilion.
On the 20th November 1977 the gates were named the ‘Ken Gulliver Gates’ and a plaque was erected commemorating his fiftieth year as a player by the Mosman Middle Harbour District Cricket Club.
Mosman Cricket Club Inc. (as it is known today) was formed in 1908 but was only allowed to play second and third grade on the oval until 1921. Since then many international players and grade stalwarts have graced this fine ground.
Allan Border Oval remains home to Mosman Cricket Club and today the facilities include turf pitches, grandstand, night lighting, toilets and disabled access.
