With over 200 entries received, judges faced a difficult task in selecting 80 for exhibition. The selected photographs reflect the diverse, strange and beautiful aspects of Mosman as well as the wide variety of people who live and work in the area. As an exhibition, ‘Faces of Mosman’ provides a unique snapshot of the suburb and surrounding area.
Professional photographer and competition judge Brian McInerney whose exhibition Famous Faces: Fascinating Places is on concurrently, was impressed by the range of entries. Brian particularly admired the portraits which reflected the ages of wonder, delight and life experience on the faces of the photographers’ subjects.
Competition judge Sandra Byron, Director of Sandra Byron Gallery and former Curator of Photography at the Art Gallery of NSW, was especially delighted with the quality and variety of entries from the primary school aged photographers. These entries captured personal and often spontaneous images of the photographers’ friends, family and animals who are an important part of their life in Mosman.
Daniel, Ben and Clare at Balmoral - Jill White
Winner of the professional photographer category is Cremorne resident Jill White for her entry Daniel, Ben and Clare at Balmoral. Jill White has had a long professional career which began in 1958 with her work as assistant to the legendary Australian photographers Max Dupain and David Moore. Apart from her own work as a professional photographer, Jill is the custodian of the Max Dupain Exhibition Negative Archive and produces these images for publications and exhibitions.
Reflections at Sunrise - Lynda Howitt
Winner of the amateur category is Lynda Howitt for her atmospheric Reflections at Sunrise photographed through her window at her home in Balmoral.
Beach Scene II - Laura Fitzpatrick
Winner of the primary aged category is Laura Fitzpatrick from Mosman Public School, for her humorous Beach Scene II. This image features a close encounter between her large, beach loving cat, Tiger and a fascinated toddler on the sands of Balmoral.
Distorted Image - Michael Stone
Winner of the secondary aged category is Michael Stone from North Sydney Boys High for his photograph Distorted Image. The judges enjoyed Michael’s interpretation of the competition theme ‘Faces of Mosman’ as he chose to photograph his own distorted reflection in a convex street parking mirror.
Festival sponsor Nikon has generously provided camera prizes for the winners of the professional, amateur, secondary student and primary student categories.
Those attending throughout the exhibition until the 15th of October can vote for the Viewers Choice Award sponsored by The Bathers’ Pavilion, Balmoral.
Mosman Council and Mosman Art Gallery gratefully acknowledges the generous sponsorship of Nikon and the valuable contributions of Amarisco and The Bathers’ Pavilion to the ‘Faces of Mosman’ Photography Competition.
